Formerly known as “Old Homestead” and “Texas Pole” the Kentucky Wonder bean made its first appeared in mid 1800’s. The Kentucky Wonder bean seeds are best direct sown in the garden once the soil temperature is over 60F. These pole beans are a very heavy producer. Best harvested before the pods swell when tender and young at about 4-5″ in length. The stringless beans can be used fresh, frozen, and they’re excellent for canning. Picking the beans results in wave after wave of harvest. The Kentucky Wonder beans can also be used as a dry bean in recipes such as soups. When left to dry on the vine the pods can be shelled for the light tan beans. Be sure and provide a tall trellis when planting the Kentucky Wonder bean seeds as they can easily reach 6-8′ in height.
