Grow these Yellow Habanero pepper seeds if you’re seeking that traditional fruity habanero flavor with a hint of citrus. Once established, the plants will be abundant with multi lobed, waxy looking thin-skinned pods. The Yellow Habanero peppers are about 1-1.5″ in size. Pods ripen from green to yellow. If left to mature on the plant the pods will take on a slightly orangish tone. Plants grow in somewhat of a wide bush like form with an average heigh of about 24″ in height, rarely exceeding 36″ tall. Like all Habanero plants, these are highly productive and you’ll get abundant amounts of chilis from a single plant. Our experience is that you get a minimum of 3-4 dozen pods from each plant even in a short growing season. The Scoville rating of these chilis tops out around 325,000 SHU, average for most Habanero varieties.
The citrus flavor of these Yellow Habaneros is highly sought after with many calling this variety the best of all the habaneros. The yellow color of these pods will brighten up a salsa or make a nice colorful hot sauce. We prefer to mix the Red, Orange, and Yellow Habaneros when making hot sauce or dehydrating into pepper powder. Since the pepper walls are not very thick, they dry out quickly when dehydrating even at low temperatures around 100F. We recommend splitting them in half before dehydrating.
Some say that the Yellow Habanero pepper seeds are harder to germinate than the other habaneros but that is not our experience. Always start pepper seeds indoors at least 10-12 weeks pre-season, before the last frost date. When the sown seeds are kept at a temperature greater than 80F, we usually see germination in about a week. Be sure and use moist high quality potting soil and a heat mat. These ideal conditions ensure proper germination. After the seedlings pop up above the soil be sure to give them a strong light source to prevent them from getting leggy. Be sure and check out our guide on starting pepper plants indoors for more information on germinating pepper seeds.
