Description
80 days to maturity. Container friendly. Disease resistant. Non-GMO. Determinate. Open-pollinated. The Roma VF tomato seeds originated in the 1950’s specifically for resistance to Verticillium wilt and Fusarium wilt (VF). The botanical name is Solanum lycoperscium. Roma VF tomatoes, often referred to as paste tomatoes, are meaty with low water content making them a favorite for tomato sauces, tomato paste, ketchup, and sun-dried tomatoes. As a determinate variety of plum tomato, the Roma VF are an excellent choice for growing in containers. Plants will reach a height of about 36″ tall. The bright red, plum shaped fruit will all ripen within a 2-3 week period once the plant has matured, perfect for those who love canning tomato sauce. Tomatoes on these plants grow in clusters with each weighing about 2 oz. each. If provided at least 8 hours of sunlight every day then each plant will produce many dozen fruit.
Starting Roma VF Tomato Seeds
To get the best yield, start the Roma VF tomato seeds indoors about 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost date. A high quality seed starting mix will help ensure proper moisture and drainage so seeds don’t rot before they germinate. Typically, tomato seeds take about 7-14 days to germinate but if the soil temperature is not about 70F it could take up to a month before the seedlings break the soil surface. We recommend using a seedling heat mat and temperature controller when starting tomato and pepper seeds to speed up germination. A humidity dome over your seed starting tray will also help maintain warmth and moisture of the soil. The tomato seedlings should be provided a good light source immediately once they sprout to prevent them from getting leggy. Light coming in a window is rarely strong enough for proper seedling growth, even a south facing window. Before planting into the garden, don’t forget about hardening off the tomato plants. This is necessary if started under fluorescents or LED lights indoors. Tomatoes mature best in well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8.
